Bone plates are surgical tools, which are used to assist in the healing of broken and fractured bones. The cracks are first set, and then held in place using bone plates in situations where casts cannot be applied to the injured area. Bone plates are often applied to fractures occurring to facial areas such the nose, jaw or eye sockets. Nails are used as the method of fixation in cases of combination of complex femoral fractures. This procedure is performed in fractures of femoral shaft associated with fracture neck of femur, pathological fractures of proximal third of femur with trochanteric pathology, & ipsilateral fracture of femur and tibia in polytrauma cases with multiple injuries.
