Profile: Somedic Sales AB specializes in offering electro-medical equipment, for clinical and laboratory use. We offer our systems for QST (Quantitative Sensory Testing) as well as laboratory equipment for physiological and pharmacological research. We also offer courses to help in the use of our products, as well as provide full service facilities including a well equipped mechanic workshop. We develop, manufacture and market instruments & systems for research as well as clinical work in pain physiology & pharmacology. Quantitative Sensory Testing (QST) is a method to diagnose different diseases affecting the peripheral nervous system, including diabetes, leprosy and HIV. In QST, the thresholds of the senses of temperature, touch, pressure, vibration and pain are determined with adequate physical stimulation of the human skin. As the stimulation activates stimuli-specific receptors, nerve fibres that innervate the receptors forward the message of the stimuli to the central nervous system, where a percept may be created. In occupational health, QST is also frequently used to monitor and stage the neurotoxic effects of occupational exposure to various chemical agents & vibration. In pharmacology, numerous studies are performed where the positive effects on the nervous system, as well as possible negative side effects of new drugs are monitored with QST. Our aesthesiometer evaluates the skins sensitivity to touch by using a set of 17 filaments mounted on plexiglas handles. Each handle has at one end a nylon monofilament mounted at a right angle to the handle. The force required to buckle the monofilament increases from 0.026 g in the first handle of the set to 110 g in the last.
The company was founded in 1971.
