Deep brain stimulators consist of three components: the implanted pulse generator, the lead, and the extension. The implanted pulse generator is a battery powered neurostimulator encased in a titanium housing, which sends electrical pulses to the brain to interfere with neural activity at the target site. The lead is a coiled wire insulated in polyurethane with four platinum iridium electrodes and is placed in one of three areas of the brain. The lead is connected to the IPG by the extension, an insulated wire that runs from the head, down the side of the neck, behind the ear to the IPG, which is placed subcutaneously below the clavicle or in some cases, the abdomen. The IPG can be calibrated by a neurologist, nurse or trained technician to optimize symptom suppression and control side effects.

Demineralized bone matrix is a composite of collagenous and noncollagenous proteins that contain bone growth factors. It may serve as both a bone graft enhancer and expander in spinal fusions. The osteoinductive potential of demineralized bone matrix is related to the presence of several osteoinductive proteins and growth factors, such as bone morphogenetic protein and transforming growth factor.

Disc replacement is an artificial disc that is implanted into the spine to imitate the functions of a normal disc. It is the soft cushioning structure located between the individual bones of the spine, called vertebra. It is made of cartilage-like tissue and consists of an outer portion, called the annulus, and an inner portion, called the nucleus. In most cases, the disc is flexible enough to allow the spine to bend.
