Profile: New York Blood Center provides life-saving blood products, clinical & transfusion services. We serve as a resource for tranfusion specialists, blood bank directors and hospital transfusion services. Our medical staff, which includes world-renowned experts in transfusion technology, provides guidance and expertise about blood transfusions, stem cell transplantation, and blood-borne diseases. Our platelet product, platelet concentrate is used to treat bleeding caused by thrombocytopenia or functionally abnormal platelets. It contains at least 5.5 x 1010 platelets in 50-70 ml of plasma & is prepared from individual units of whole blood by centrifugation. It contains leukocytes, which may transmit CMV, cause GVHD, lead to alloimmunization and cause febrile transfusion reactions. Our plasma product, RH Immune globulin is a sterile immunoglobulin solution prepared from plasma of human donors who have been immunized to Rh-positive red blood cells. It is supplied as single-dose vials or in syringes as noted and is used to prevent sensitization to the Rh factor, thus preventing hemolytic disease of the newborn. It may be used following spontaneous or induced abortion up to 12 weeks gestation, when given at a reduced dosage.
