Phacoemulsification Systems
Phacoemulsification systems possess two major integrated units: fluidic systems consisting of irrigation, aspiration, and cooling; and an ultrasonic system to fragment the lens. Additional components of phacoemulsification systems may include cautery and vitrectomy units. The fluidic system involves the active flow of fluids into and from the anterior chamber of the eye. During phacoemulsification some limited intraocular pressure is produced to maintain the eye at its normal size; this is particularly important in animals in which the low scleral rigidity collapses the anterior segment once aqueous humor is removed. The delivery and egress of balanced salt solution or lactated Ringer's solution is controlled by the ophthalmic surgeon via a foot control which can maintain a balance of irrigation and aspiration to provide sufficient inflation of the anterior segment, facilitate removal of lens fragments, and cool the ultrasonic components.

Phacoemulsification/fragmentation Fluidic (FDA Code: MUS / 886.467)

Phacoemulsificator
The Phaco-Emulsification simulation approach is integrated into a real-time virtual reality training system for cataract surgery. For the phacoemulsification task, we model the eye lens as a collection of simplices, built from a tetrahedron mesh, with mass particles placed in tetrahedrons barycenters. Links connecting particles are maintained in order to provide geometrical information for deriving the external triangular mesh for rendering, and for recognizing crystalline lens independent fragments when phacoemulsification is performed. The phacoemulsificator device is modeled by eroding particles.

Phoropters
A Phoropter (or phoroptor) is an instrument commonly used by optometrists and ophthalmologists during an eye examination to measure an individual's refractive error and determine his or her eyeglass prescription. Sometimes a retinoscope or an automated refractor is used to provide initial settings for the phoropter. Phoropters can also measure phorias (natural resting position of the eyes), accommodative amplitudes, accommodative leads/lags, accommodative posture, horizontal and vertical vergences. The major components of the phoropter are the JCC (Jackson Cross-Cylinder) used for astigmatism correction, Risley prisms to measure phorias and vergences, and the (+), (-), and cylinder lenses. Propters are made with either plus or minus cylinders.

Photodynamic Therapy
Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a treatment that combines a light source and a photosensitizing agent to destroy cancer cells. It works because the photosensitizing agent collects more readily in cancer cells than in normal cells. When the agent is then exposed to light, it reacts with oxygen to create chemicals that can kill the cell. As the approved light sources can only penetrate a limited depth through tissue, PDT is mainly used to treat areas on or just under the skin, or in the lining of internal organs.

Photokeratoscope (FDA Code: HJA / 886.135)

Identification. A keratoscope is an AC-powered or battery-powered device intended to measure and evaluate the corneal curvature of the eye. Lines and circles within the keratoscope are used to observe the corneal reflex. This generic type of device includes the photokeratoscope which records corneal curvature by taking photographs of the cornea.
